The Season of the Lilac

non-fiction 4 Comments »

Why is the season of the lilac is so short? Perhaps it wouldn’t be so spectacular if lilacs lasted through the summer. This brief period is one of my favorite times of the year. Is it because it is so brief? I don’t know. I get the same feeling as I used to when I was child waiting for Christmas. I’m filled with excitement and anticipation! In these Spring days, I find myself checking outside several times a day to see the progress of these tiny buds, shut so tight, and devoid of any aroma, waiting for the hour they burst into the white, pink and purple blossoms. And when these perennials break open, they take possession of the back yard. The lilac commands attention and turns our heads ~ for those moments, the lilac carries us away into a place of no words. They overpower every other fragrance around. If it is possible to be in love with the lilacs, I am there and I look forward to this immense bit of nature that chooses to reveal itself for a span of just days, to succumb to this short-lived intoxication. Celebrate the season and breathe!

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom~Anaïs Nin
